Broadway Jazz
There’s nothing more mesmerizing that watching actors sing and dance as
they express themselves on stage or even in films. Dance is a natural form of
expression and a very effective one, too. On stage, in musicals, the theater
comes alive with each step taken and each note sung. This is the infectious
nature of Broadway Jazz.
With a strong technical foundation, jazz dancers can focus on the
stylistic and performance aspects of dance. A solid technique is essential for
us to be able to do the leaps and turns that thrill and amaze the audience.
This means that proper posture is also important, so it is common for many jazz
dancers – and many actors on Broadway – to have extensive backgrounds in
ballet. However, one of the biggest differences between ballet and jazz is that
the first emphasizes the up-beat in music, while the latter emphasizes the down-beat.
Like ballet, central control is crucial in jazz since the body’s center
is the focus of all movements. Without this center, we are not able to maintain
our balance while doing those pirouettes and leaps that everyone loves to see
on stage.
Broadway is known for its lively and energetic musical numbers and
competition among dancers can be fierce. However, being on that stage in front
of a delighted audience as you bare your soul and express your truest emotions
– or at least those of your character – is one of the most invigorating and
exciting experiences you can have as a dancer. Every performance is different
and every show is unique.
Broadway Jazz lessons are the first step on the path to discovering this
compelling and rejuvenating form of dance where passion and self-expression can
be seen in every movement that a dancer takes. Pull on your jazz shoes and join us and who knows….one day, we might be cheering you on in the theater as you
entertain audiences with your impressive jumps and fluidity of movement
onstage.
